ACUPUNCTURE
All needles used in our clinic are pre-sterilized, single-use and disposable. The needles are usually inserted with a guide tube. It is virtually painless! Some people feel a slight pinch when the needle goes in, and this is mostly at the most sensitive areas such as the wrists or the face. For needle sensitive patients, we supply silicone coated needles for smoother and painless insertion. HERBAL MEDICINE
We stock a full herbal dispensary. You might go home with a prescription - it could be a big bag of bulk herbs you boil everyday and drink, or it may be a powder, tincture or tablet. Please visit the herbs page for more info on the herbs we stock in our dispensary.
MOXIBUSTION (MOXA)
Moxa is made from the mugwort (Artemesia) plant. A wooly, golden cotton-like material is collected from the underside of the mugwort leaf. This is pressed or rolled into cones or bits the size of a grain of rice and burned over acupuncture points. More commonly, a smokeless variety is used since unprocessed moxa can produce a large volume of smoke. Moxa is very effective for pain relief, healing trauma, enhancing the immune system, dispelling internal cold, menstrual cramps/pain and many, many other applications. In addition, moxa has the pleasant side effect of calming the mind.
CUPPING
Cupping is an ancient technique used all over the world. Glass or bamboo bowls are placed on the surface of the body - the air in the glass is removed either by flame or by a suction vaccuum. The suction created will take up the skin underneath the glass bowl. You may feel a tight or tingling sensation. The cups are remarkably effective for pain, muscle tightness/stiffness, arthritis, bronchitis and asthma. They "suck out" any stagnation or tension trapped in the muscles, improve the flow of fresh blood, oxygen and qi to the area, and help to remove toxins.GUA-SHA
Gua-Sha is a scraping technique used on the surface of the skin. The acupuncturist uses a jade, stone, porcelain, metal or plastic wedge to gently scrape a selected area (depending on the health condition). The scraping stimulates the flow of qi along the meridians which stimulates healing. It is very effective for warding off fevers and colds/the flu when just in the beginning stages. Gua-Sha is also remarkable for relieving muscle tension.
